RE:CONNECT (November 2019)

November 2019 saw CUDS lead an exciting creative project in response to the current climate crisis. An online call-out for contributors was met with great enthusiasm and energy, and over three weeks an impressive and dynamic variety of work was produced by some wonderful creative individuals.

The project culminated in two informal sharings in the Judith E. Wilson Studio. The programme opened with a moving dance piece set to an original spoken word accompaniment 'Blow My Mind', written by Matthias Munkey-Ediger and choreographed by Atlanta Hatch, Freya Ruparel, Georgia Marker and Jasmine Coomber. This was followed by a thought-provoking video piece created by university students Scarlett Croft and Betty Townley, which used a series of voice recordings asking 'What are you most afraid of losing in the climate catastrophe?' as accompaniment for visuals exploring over-consumption and waste.

Third year student Poppy Rowe then delivered an engaging and eye-opening talk on both the amazing opportunities for expression and the dangers of waste and exploitation in the fashion industry, before two members of the XR Rebel Hoopers wowed those in attendance with an improvised routine. Twirling their hoops under electric blue lighting, Bianca De Sanctis and Rachel Quillen delivered a powerful performance set to 'We Sink' by Chvrches and accompanied with footage of floods, the October rebellion and images from Gideon Mendel's 'Drowning World' series.*

The sharing closed with a real highlight: an eight-minute dance piece set to a simply outstanding original composition by second year student Aidan Tulloch. Choreographed and performed collaboratively by Atlanta Hatch, Freya Ruparel, Jasmine Coomber, Alice Birch, Georgia Marker, Sasha Abrahams, Hazel Nicholson and Jennifer Tang, incorporating elements of different dance genres and with stunning lighting by Emily Booth, this piece undoubtedly made a strong impact on both the audience and those performing. The perfect way to close the project, this truly collaborative creation epitomised the contributors' anxieties, fears and hopes for the future of our planet.

Special thanks must go to each and every collaborator for their wonderful and passionate contributions, as well as to the CUDS committee for their support and hard work in making this project possible! We hope that for all of those who were involved this offered an important opportunity to explore  feelings about the world around us, an encouragement to consider more carefully the choices we make given their implications in this world, and a springboard for further action in tackling the crisis that we now face.

Workshop with Zenaida Yanowsky (The Royal Ballet)

For our first workshop of the year we were delighted to have Zenaida Yanowsky, former principal of the Royal Ballet in Cambridge in celebration of World Ballet Day.
She began by leading an intermediate workshop for a group of 20 dancers, which we hope everyone gained a lot of knowledge from. We then had two advanced dancers, Vera and Attilla, each work one on one with Zenaida on a variation each. It was fascinating to hear more detail, particularly on the artistic quality of each movement and the contrast between the Sleeping Beauty and Bluebird variations was lovely to see. We ended the afternoon with a Q&A where we got to hear more about Zenaida's life and her experience in the ballet world and the challenges she's faced and overcome.
It was such an honour to learn from Zenaida and we are hugely grateful to her, as well as to all our participants for coming along!

Freshers' Event / Open CUDS Meeting

10/15/2019

CUDS enjoyed a brilliant start to the new academic year with our Dance Mixer and Open Meeting on Sunday 13th October. We were thrilled to introduce ourselves to the Cambridge Dance scene, and make such a great first step in our goal to improving the connections between dancers in the city. Attendees included the presidents of CUTAZZ and the Cambridge Dancers' Club, as well as Daniel Cosette, the co-founder of Infusion Physical Theatre, representatives of the Irish Dance Club, English and Scottish folk dance and the newly formed Bollywood Dance Troupe, and new university students keen to find out more about dance!

Supplied by snacks and soft drinks, the CUDS committee led an open meeting, discussing the process of rebuilding the society, our hopes for the future, and potential opportunities in terms of collaborative events and financial support. Attendees were entertained by wonderful performances by Natalie Tan and Stephanie Cheung, dancers and choreographers from the Cambridge University Dance Competition Team, and the mesmerising Bachata duo of Veronica and Bryan (check out our Societies page to find out about the classes they run in Cambridge!)

It was fantastic to meet so many new faces, and excited for what looks to be a very promising Autumn term for CUDS!

COMING NEXT: Workshop with Zenaida Yanowsky (former Royal Ballet Principal), Sunday 20th October, 3-6pm.

'an iconic and ground-breaking British dance-theatre company, famous for telling stories with a unique theatrical twist' (www.new-adventures.net/about-us), Matthew Bourne's New Adventures have brought their dynamic and emotional narratives to life on the world's stages for over thirty years. With a legacy of community engagement and artist development that has inspired generations of dancers, the company was the natural choice for the re-introduction of CUDS' commitment to providing further opportunities for dancers in Cambridge.

Michaela Meazza and Jack Jones, both of whom have a rich performance history with New Adventures, ran a three hour intermediate level workshop exploring the world of Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake, which has recently been re-invigorated ahead of a national (and now international) tour. The perfect break from exam term and revision, Michaela and Jack led participants through a contemporary dance warm-up, taught repertoire from the iconic show, and encouraged dancers to engage in creative tasks before running a Q & A on life as a professional dance-theatre artist.

With overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, we would like to thank Michaela, Jack, and the entire New Adventures team for such an inspirational and exciting workshop. Keep your eyes on our Events and Facebook pages for more workshops, talks and events from CUDS over the next year!
